Reporting to the VP Product Management and Casualty Strategy, the Casualty Product Manager leads a team of Casualty Underwriting Specialists responsible for the stewardship of the following lines of business: commercial auto, commercial general liability and umbrella. Successful stewardship includes serving as the organization's foremost expert on all casualty matters, significantly enhancing casualty expertise within the company and each Insurance Segment achieving is objectives relative to growth, profit and industry diversification.

 

Responsibilities

 

Leadership:

 

  • Direct and develop the Casualty Underwriting Specialists within Product Management and Development (PMD)
  • Cultivate a positive and collaborative relationship with colleagues throughout the organization to drive optimal results for the casualty lines of business
  • Serve on the Workers Compensation and Casualty Priorities Task Force

 

Line of Business Expertise:

 

  • Respond to internal inquiries regarding casualty products, including coverage interpretation, policy construction, rating plans and technical guidelines
  • Ensure that all coverage forms, rates, rules, LCM's and rating plans are competitive, produce an underwriting profit and comply with regulatory requirements
  • Develop proprietary coverage forms, rates, rules and rating plans that offer the greatest return on investment
  • Create and maintain technical reference materials
  • Develop and implement a training curriculum in conjunction with the Segments and other PMD staff
  • Develop and implement quality assurance processes in conjunction with the Segments and other PMD staff
  • Assist Corporate Marketing with the development of point-of-sale materials that illustrate the benefits of PMA casualty products
  • Assist with responses to market conduct exams, filings, bureau criticisms, and data calls
  • Assist with overseeing the accuracy Policy Decisions, specifying enhancements required to support new or amended products and identifying opportunities to optimize functionality

 

Portfolio Management:

 

  • Monitor and analyze PMA and industry gross written premiums, profits and evolving loss exposures
  • Assist in the exploration of market opportunities
  • Assist the VP PMD, Segment leadership and regional leadership with the development, adjustment and implementation of strategies, underwriting and pricing guidelines, underwriting and pricing tools, underwriting authority letters, and portfolio composition to achieve Segment growth and profitability objectives
  • Demonstrate commitment to Company's Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, and apply knowledge of compliance policies and procedures, standards and laws applicable to job responsibilities in the performance of work.
Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Expert leadership skills with a proven ability to mentor others
  • Strong desire to work collaboratively and foster a team-oriented environment
  • 15 years of experience underwriting commercial auto, commercial general liability and umbrella
  • 3 years of experience as an underwriting manager or product manager
  • Exceptional understanding of policy language, contractual liability, rating plans, risk selection models and pricing models
  • Comprehensive understanding of the exposures and mitigating controls applicable to businesses operating in the following industry verticals; manufacturing, food processing, distribution, retail, business services and personal services
  • Robust understanding of the legal environment
  • Experience with products designed for accounts with casualty premiums between $50,000 and $5 million, including guaranteed cost, large deductibles, retrospectively rated plans, groups and captives
  • Experience developing technical reference materials and underwriting guidelines
  • Experience training underwriters
  • Effective research and analytical skills, with the ability to translate findings into recommendations and decisions
  • Superb organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to confidently interact with people at all levels of an organization, internally and externally
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel for business purposes
  • Experience in a product management role is beneficial
  • Experience underwriting in multiple regions of the country is beneficial
