The Personal Lines Underwriting Manager is responsible for managing the review, maintenance, and implementation of underwriting philosophy, strategy and guidelines for personal lines of business for all states. The Underwriting Manager is also responsible for the supervision of and handling underwriting edit referrals or other assigned risk reviews, including making and implementing underwriting decisions on new business, renewals, inspections and endorsements. As an Underwriting leader they will participate and collaborate in the management of territorial underwriting profitability as well as work with agency marketing on agency management and profitability.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Promote profitable growth in all products and operating states.
Establish, review, maintain, amend, and implement underwriting philosophy, strategy and guidelines for property lines of business.
Market penetration and agency management including building, maintaining, and managing producer and customer relationships.
Direct timely exception level case underwriting of new business, renewals, inspections and endorsements.
Supervise and conduct routine and special underwriting review projects.
Conduct and/or lead industry level, portfolio level, producer/underwriter level and policy level results reviews with development of appropriate action plans for results improvement.
Monitor and manage geographic spread of risk.
Collaborate with underwriting, pricing, operations, claims, marketing.
Act as underwriting contact for internal and external audits and exams.
Review and draft written responses to consumer, agent and DOI inquiries and complaints related to underwriting action.
Ability to interact with all levels of internal and external business partners effectively and professionally.
Ability and desire to be creative and adaptable in a changing business environment.
Evaluation and reconciliation of vendor billings.
Communicate with agents and other company personnel with regards to insureds, policies, coverages, etc. either by phone or written correspondence.
Some travel may be required.

Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
5+ years of recent industry experience to include advanced knowledge and understanding of personal lines products (Homeowners, Automobile, and Umbrella) processes and fundamental underwriting principles.
Direct Management experience.
Demonstrate ability to lead complex underwriting assignments.
Strong analytical, organizational and time management skills.
Strong communication skills
Ability to direct and lead a geographically disparate team of underwriters and support personnel.
Experience and knowledge of risk segmentation, financial analysis, insurance pricing, internet business channels, business planning and strategy and business project / program management.
Understanding of state and federal regulatory compliance requirements.
Proficiency with Microsoft office applications including Access, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Recent experience underwriting personal lines in FL, TX, SC, AZ, NV, CA, HI.
Experience training and mentoring underwriters, customer service representatives and support staff
Licenses and / or Certifications:
CPCU not required but preferred
